SEBoK Requirements Traceability, Distilled

Next-40 distillation, batch 3, item 3. Requirements Traceability is a SEBoK target page that does not currently exist as an independent article. The discipline is carried in Requirements Management (which names traceability linkages to operational scenarios, risks, related requirements, V&V artifacts and emphasizes bidirectional traceability), System Requirements Definition (which prescribes the early definition of a traceability model), Configuration Management, and System Architecture Design Definition. Read structurally, requirements traceability is the corpus's pulverization (Doc 445) audit trail at engagement scale: every requirement is a candidate that, to remain in the baseline, must be linked backward to its source need and forward to its V&V evidence. Six corpus forms compose. Authoritative Source of Truth (ASoT) and Requirements Management Tools (RMT) are institutional-ground (Doc 571) artifacts.

Requirements Management states that traceability links span operational scenarios, risks, related requirements, and V&V artifacts; bidirectional traceability is emphasized as a critical RM function. Tooling support comes via Requirements Management Tools (RMT) enabling data sharing across project tools and establishing an Authoritative Source of Truth (ASoT). The Guidelines page asserts that "end-to-end traceability between requirements, design, implementation, verification results" is demanded for high-rigor projects. System Requirements Definition prescribes that "a traceability model should be defined at the beginning of the project" to clarify which relationships will be maintained throughout development; traceability supports requirement-to-need linking, change-impact analysis, and hierarchical-relationship maintenance. III. Structural Read

Form VI — Pulverization (Doc 445), at engagement scale. Requirements traceability is the audit trail of the engagement-wide pulverization. Each requirement is a candidate that must remain linked backward (to a stakeholder need, mission-analysis claim, or constraint) and forward (to an architectural element, an implementation, a V&V artifact). A requirement that loses both anchors becomes a pulverization-failure: it cannot defend its place in the baseline. Doc 445 Refinement A's two-anchor structure $T = \langle T_I, T_E \rangle$ reads cleanly: $T_I$ is upstream traceability (source/intent), $T_E$ is downstream traceability (evidence/realization). Bidirectional traceability is the paired-anchor pulverization made operational.

Form X — Institutional Ground (Doc 571), with Section X.5 organization-vs-enterprise. The ASoT concept is a §X.5 claim: the organization-component (formal RMT system, designated database) is the authoritative carrier; the enterprise-component (the working practice of writing, reviewing, and maintaining links) is what keeps the ASoT coherent under change. ASoT decay is a §X.5 failure mode: the formal system can be intact while the working practice has stopped maintaining links, producing a stale-but-formally-authoritative artifact.

Form III (extension) — Lattice Extension (Doc 572), with Appendix D universal-sibling. The traceability dimensions (operational scenarios, risks, related requirements, V&V artifacts, design elements, implementation elements) are universal-sibling lattice at the requirement rung: each dimension binds every requirement, the discriminator is aspect. This is the seventh independent Appendix D instance after Docs 589, 596, 598, 599, 601, 603.

Form IV — Pin-Art Model (Doc 270). The traceability matrix is pin-art: rows are requirements, columns are linked artifacts, cells are link presence. The matrix's pattern is the substrate's accumulated coupling between intent and realization.

Form III — Substrate-and-Keeper Composition (Doc 510). Traceability is keeper-side audit discipline applied across the engagement's entire requirements substrate. The keeper writes the links; the substrate (requirement statements + their referents) accepts or refuses them based on whether the linkage is sound.

Form V — Hypostatic Boundary (Doc 372). Traceability describes structural relationships between artifacts, not ontological commitments about what requirements ARE. A trace-link asserts that requirement R was derived from need N; it does not claim R is reducible to N or that N is the only reason R exists.

V. Residuals

No structural residuals. The traceability case strengthens Doc 445 Refinement A's two-anchor pulverization with an engagement-scale instance and adds a seventh universal-sibling-lattice instance to the Cluster A count.

VI. Provisional Refinements

Doc 572 Appendix D cluster strength reaches seven with traceability dimensions joining requirement types (SE-024), architecture views (SE-031), competency dimensions (SE-033), CMMI typical measures (SE-034), MODA value axes (SE-036), HSI domains (SE-038). The cluster is now denser than the multi-keeper composition cluster was when Doc 604 formalized it.
