SEBoK System Verification, Distilled

Next-40 distillation, batch 2/5, doc 7 of 8. System Verification is the SEBoK page that defines verification as "confirmation, through the provision of objective evidence, that specified requirements have been fulfilled" and partitions the discipline into five techniques (inspection, analysis, demonstration, test, analogy/similarity). The verification-vs-validation aphorism ("solved the problem right" vs. "working the right problem") is canonical Cluster F (pulverization, Doc 445): verification is backward-pulverization against requirements baseline; validation is forward-pulverization against intended use. The five techniques are Cluster A (universal-sibling lattice, Doc 572 Appendix D) at the verification-method rung. "Verification is the confirmation, through the provision of objective evidence, that specified requirements have been fulfilled." Purpose: identifying faults and defects introduced during transformations of inputs into outputs; ensuring such transformations follow "selected and appropriate methods, techniques, standards, or rules." Five techniques: Inspection (visual/dimensional examination), Analysis (mathematical/probabilistic/logical reasoning, including modeling and simulation), Demonstration (observable testing of operational characteristics, "field testing"), Test (controlled functional and performance verification with specialized instrumentation), Analogy/Similarity (evidence from similar elements with equivalent or less stringent context). V vs. V: verification is "solved the problem right"; validation is "working the right problem." Verification comparisons binary; validation judgments assess acceptability. Cluster F — Pulverization (Doc 445), verification-anchor of the paired V&V pulverization. SE-039 Cluster F notes verification as "referenced via SE-029" — the verification anchor of the paired pulverization. This page closes that reference: verification is the backward-pulverization direction against the requirements baseline (the $T_I$ inner-anchor in Refinement A's paired-anchors language). Validation (SE-029) is the backward-pulverization against use-evidence (the $T_E$ outer-anchor). Together V&V is the canonical Doc 445 paired-pulverization. The "binary comparisons" framing for verification matches Refinement B's high-rigor-end calibration; verification at the formal level is binary by design.

Cluster A — Universal-sibling lattice (Doc 572 Appendix D), at the verification-method rung, eighth instance. The five techniques (inspection, analysis, demonstration, test, analogy/similarity) are universal-sibling lattice. Each binds wherever verification is performed; the discriminator is method-aspect (visual vs. logical vs. observable vs. instrumented vs. analogical). Each technique applies at multiple system rungs. After Docs 589, 596, 598, 599, 601, 603, 614, this is the eighth Cluster A instance.

Cluster I — Pin-art / temporal-concurrency (Doc 270 / Doc 572 Appendix C). Verification activities run across the life cycle: requirements verification at requirements baseline, design verification at design review, implementation verification at unit-test, integration verification at integration test, system verification at acceptance. Pin-art at every life-cycle stage; temporal-concurrency lattice when stages overlap.

Cluster D — Co-production at sub-rungs (Doc 573). "Validation presupposes prior verification completion" sequences the two as ordered co-productions. Verification's outputs (objective evidence of requirements satisfaction) are co-produced between engineer-keeper (who specifies and runs the verification) and the system-substrate (which supplies the evidence). The validation step then composes the verification output with stakeholder-keeper assessment of fitness-for-use.

Cluster F paired V&V pulverization closes its verification anchor. SE-039 Cluster F flagged verification as "referenced via SE-029." With this distillation, the verification anchor is mapped directly. Cluster F's canonical paired-pulverization (verification + validation) is now both anchors mapped: SE-054 (verification, this doc) + SE-029 (validation).

Cluster A reaches eight instances. Stable; no formalization adjustment needed beyond noting the verification-method lattice as a particularly clean five-axis case.
